What is Landfill Gas? Landfill Gas (LFG) is produced by the naturally occurring decay of organic matter disposed of in the landfill. Methane, which is the primary component of LFG (approximately 50%) is a recognized “greenhouse gas”, which if released into the atmosphere, would add to the problem of global warming. How Is Landfill Gas Captured? The LFG is captured through a system of horizontal pipes which are installed within the landfilled trash to collect this gas and transport it to a facility that conditions the gas to make it more suitable for reuse.
